Rising Hawk, a warrior, has just completed the sacred purification ceremony of the Onikare, the sweat lodge. He is in prayer.
The Eagle feather, wrapped with sage and cedar, connects him with the Great Spirit and is used to seek Grandfather Sky's blessing of his shield from the four directions.
The four feathers on his shield represent the four directions. The otter's tail is for swiftness of spirit. The Thunderbird, Wakan’tanka, is the giver of revelation and protector of the sacred pipe and will take him on his journey to the hereafter. The trade cloth represents peace.
